Evaluating the barriers and opportunities for behaviour change interventions to reduce disposable plastic bag use and waste in the Galapagos islands
For my MSc in Conservation Science research project I was fortunate enough to spend May to July 2018 in the incredible Galapagos Islands, mainly based on San Cristobal at the wonderful Galapagos Science Centre. My research was in collaboration with the Galapagos Conservation Trust, and involved interviewing 35 key single-use plastic bag stakeholders - Government officials, National Park and Conservation NGO managers, tourism and other business owners and community leaders, to understand their perspectives, motivations and views on potential ways to reduce usage. I also designed questionnaires to distribute to the general population, to cross-check their perspectives with those of the stakeholders, and collected 212 of these. Based on the results, I produced an MSc thesis, an infographic to communicate the findings back to the islands stakeholders, presented key findings in a talk and poster presentation at the prestigious International Congress for Conservation Biology 2019, and have published a multi-disciplinary collaborative paper.
While on the islands I had the opportunity to help undergraduate groups on a green turtle photo-ID project, collecting photos in the water and using matching software in the lab.
